Year 1

The MSci Year 1 students embarked on a journey framed by the programme’s annual theme, ‘Reducing Inequalities. The theme was explored looking through the lens of equity, considering the specific resources in a given context and the notion of achieving balance to reduce inequality.

The design projects were sited in Southwark, London. Over the centuries, Southwark has transformed from a medieval town known for its bustling markets and cultural life into a complex urban district marked by significant socio-economic contrasts. The Year 1 cohort explored the area’s past and present to speculate about possible futures in their architectural proposals.

Anchoring the initial premise of their project on the mediation between themselves and the site, they researched Southwark from a range of perspectives: historical, environmental and social.

The final building proposals showcase an ambitious approach for the near future of the neighbourhood of Southwark. They respond to local issues and needs, as framed by the council’s vision of the future of the borough. The result is a broad range of designs that ask unique questions of what architecture can address in the near future of 2035.
