MEMORIES OF THE RUBBLE: Fragments Reclaimed, Futures Rebuilt

Project details

Set in the seismic landscape of Marrakesh, Memories of the Rubble proposes a model of post-disaster reconstruction built on the memory of an abandoned building in the centre of the city, where ruins of the 2023 earthquake are not erased but honoured, where architecture becomes both a memory bank and a protective skin.

In the wake of destruction, it asks: what if the broken pieces are not remnants to be cleared away, but vessels of memory, worthy of care, preservation, and reassembly? The proposal envisions a hybrid relief centre: partly permanent, housing government aid and therapy services and partly temporary, the adaptable stone framework providing shelter in moments of crisis.

Each stone carries a story. Rather than discarding the rubble and removing said stories, the building embraces its destroyed state as a raw potential.

In this space, the ruin is not erased, but reborn. It is a proposal for resilience that honours what came before and quietly promises that from the rubble, something enduring can rise.

Fragments Reimagined: Memory Woven into Space

Fragments Reimagined: Memory Woven into Space

Interior moments reveal how salvaged fragments are carefully reintegrated into the new structure, becoming markers of memory, orientation, and continuity within a space shaped by both past and future.

From Ruin to Resilience: Evolution of the Site

From Ruin to Resilience: Evolution of the Site

A series of renders trace the site's transformation—from a collapsed mausoleum surrounded by rubble, to a reinforced structure where salvaged stone is reintegrated, embodying permanence, care, and seismic resilience.

The painting-like render captures the coexistence of past and present: the historic ruin cradled within a new structure of care. Salvaged fragments are reinserted with intention, forming a living archive of memory and resilience.

A New Architecture Embracing the Old

The plan reveals how the new structure wraps around the old, separating key programmes for clarity while aligning with existing ground markings.

Reinforcing Memory: A Technical Approach to Seismic Resilience

Reinforcing Memory: A Technical Approach to Seismic Resilience

The technical study explores the reuse of discarded stone in structural, environmental, and material contexts for an earthquake-responsive relief centre in Marrakesh, reclaiming damaged heritage to form the foundation of a more resilient future.
