Situated in the heart of Puu Vallila, Helsinki, this project proposes a tile and brick workshop founded on the indigenous Sámi culture’s concept of duodji, the emphasis on circular materiality, and respect in place of exploitation.
Corresponding to Sámi Seidi rituals, animal bone and blood waste are processed into tiles and flooring. This seeks to challenge the linear material flow of the meat and manufacturing industries. A community centre is then constructed for seasonal festivals and indigenous education. Gathering for cultural exchange is facilitated in the face of assimilation.
This is an architecture of resistance against the Sámi dispossession of land, culture and practice. Systemic changes in material practice are generate embedded change which are rooted in giving indigenous design strategies back to the originators.
As seasons change the activities extend into the park.
