Thresholds of Care and Connection

The project proposes two homes for later life set within a tree-lined site on the edge of Hampstead Heath. Designed for the third and fourth ages, the dwellings support autonomy, sensory connection to nature, and a careful dialogue between privacy and social interaction among residents.

The homes challenge conventional standards for senior housing, often reducing domestic life to a checklist of minimal and ideal dimensions or ‘add-on’ adaptations. This project asks how architecture might enable ageing with dignity, by designing from the beginning with care and detail rather than mere compliance.

The design continues a previous investigation into intuitive design and material interaction, resulting in constructions that support a multi-sensory architecture, engaging touch, light, and sound to create an environment that is responsive to changing conditions.

By reconsidering ageing as an active, evolving condition rather than a state to be managed, the project advocates for an architecture of care: one that asserts agency and fosters connection.

The armature served as a prototype for spatial moments within the home, positioning the body in dialogue with the natural landscape beyond its thresholds.

The fireplace takes on a central role in the homes, acting as a visual and social anchor. It offers warmth, spatial orientation and a familiar point of comfort, which is especially meaningful for residents with cognitive challenges such as dementia.

Through drawing, the resolution of the structure was greatly deepend. A rubble stone base meets the earth, anchoring a cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure that is wrapped in timber shingles, their surface slowly weathering.

Spaces unfold gradually, offering gentle transitions between rest and activity. The relationship between thresholds helps orient the body and builds a sense of belonging within the home and its landscape.
